Post Stem Cell Transplant Weight Loss.

A MyLeukemiaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Hartford, CT

During my initial one month hospitalization where I underwent a week of 7/3 chemotherapy I lost 20 lbs. In the 6 weeks out of the hospital I have put on 24 pounds. I am curious how much weight I can expect to loose with the 3-4 week hospital stay post transplant. I am tentatively scheduled for my transplant the end of this month. Thanks in advance.

First of all. I want to say that I love your tee shirt. I have a Fuck leukemia bracelet. I am very tiny to start with and was never a big eater. I started out at about 110 pounds when i went for my transplant. I had eaten frequent high calorie meals during my 2 rounds of chemo to maintain that weight. I had a lousy appetite during hospitalization for transplant and went down to 99 pounds. I am nearly 2 years post transplant now and weigh 109. I eat pretty well. I try to eat healthy but don’t skimp on what I like. At times I have slipped down under 105 but can bring my weight back up by eating a high calorie snack like crackers and cheese for a week or so. All the best with your transplant.

I lost about 25 pounds post transplant but some of that was lost while I was hospitalized for GVHD following the transplant. Food just did not taste good and I had to really force myself to eat. Eventually, my normal tastes came back and I regained about 15 pounds. I am hoping to maintain my current weight.

I lost a total of 58lbs going thru chemo and bone marrow transplant. It took sometime after that to put some weight back on. As of today, 3 years after, I put on 45lbs. Keep eating when you can and it will start sticking in time.
