Donna, I can only speak for AML.
While hospitalized, during the first week, my oncologist had me sign the disability form she had filed out and told me SS disability was automatically approved. I was receiving disability benefits before I got out of the hospital.

I needed disability for trama induced migraines along time ago I used a lawyer and they take a percentage of your first check and I think the amount taken depends on how long it takes to get the disability. In my case it took 18 months because they didn’t account for pain till the last time I went to court. Mine was much more complicated than yours will be. And eventually I told them about having cancer too because I have medical reviews every 5 years. So advice save a copy of everything you send social security it will help you remember the next time you need to fill out paperwork and trust me they love paperwork! I’ve been doing this since 2004 and I also had kids so I got money for them too till they turned 18 or were done college.

I have CML and was approved for long term disability in about 90 days. My disability is through a private insurance company which I got through my employer. It will continue to pay me till I reach full Social Security age. The advantage for me is it’s a lot more than Social Security would pay because it’s based on my income. My employer insurance company said I had to apply for Social Security disability as well because that would help them not to have to pay as much. I am in the process of doing that. It’s been a very long process and I am working with the insurance companies attorneys. my husband who does not have leukemia went through an attorney for disability he has a brain tumor. He used a company called Morgan and Morgan they got it done very quickly and they took all the stress off him. The cost was 25% of his first check, which is backdated to the day he applied it was definitely worth the money.
