I am a firm believer that strength training is so superior to regular cardio exercises. I helped a lady that had asthma. She could not walk from the parking lot to the building without stopping three times
After a short period of time she could walk straight through. Why
Because the heart is a muscle. It has to be strengthened like the others to perform better.
I used different protocols as references to the person to monitor improvement.
A suggestion would be take a jug and put water in it
Start with an amount you can do. Watch a clock. When the second hand hits 12 extend arms out with jug of water in your palms. Lock elbows hold straight out in front. Hold until you can't
Write down the time. Do this one everyday. You will see how much longer you can hold it. Add more water and repeat
Start lightly buy challenge yourself. You should see breathing get better.
I only trained seniors.

I think your strength training is very good and people should do their work at their own pace. Your idea to record information to see their change is very good. I hope many people read your posting and try to lift their jug of water.

I seem to struggle with the breathlessness the most at the end of the night. The feeling sometimes is breathlessness, or like I can't take a full breath of air because my lung capacity has shrunk.
I'll stop, relax, and concentrate on taking slow methodical breaths of air. Slowly I'll work up to taking deeper breaths, sometimes through my mouth and then sometimes through my nose. Occasionally, I after taking in a deep breath. I will hold it for a few seconds.
I have also found that breathing exercises with meditation (if your comfortable with meditation) helps a great deal.
Hope your struggles with breath gets easier Martha.
