I hope medical people explain the "toxic" affects of the treatment and possible ill affects. In the past chemical treatments attack both good and bad cells? These process makes people ill from loss of healthy cells. medication may have ill affects but I think only a small percentage of people are affected? Generally medication is very effective with controlling the ill affects of excess white blood cells.

Nina, I have AML and have been treated with chemotherapy as well as targeted medication. For older patients, treatment is usually not as aggressive as for younger patients because they would not be able to tolerate it.
Treatment also depends on the overall health of the patient.

I'm sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis. Here is some information that might help:

Treatment Options for AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia)
1. Chemotherapy:
- Standard initial treatment for most types of AML.
- Works by killing or damaging rapidly dividing cells, including cancer cells.
- Common drugs: Cytarabine, Anthracyclines like Doxorubicin.

2. Stem Cell Therapy:
- Involves an infusion of blood-forming stem cells to restore bone marrow.
- Typically performed after high-dose chemotherapy and sometimes radiation.

3. Targeted Therapies:
- Drugs approved for specific genetic mutations in AML cells.
- Examples: Gemtuzumab ozogamicin (for CD33 protein), Ivosidenib (for IDH1 mutation), Enasidenib (for IDH2 mutation).

4. Clinical Trials:
- Offer access to new treatments and combinations of drugs.
- Important for all phases of therapy, not just as a last resort.

Immunotherapy for ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia)
- While primarily used for ALL, immunotherapy is an emerging field.
- Types of immunotherapy for ALL include monoclonal antibodies like Besponsa and Blincyto, and CAR T-cell therapy like Kymriah.

General Advice
- Healthy Lifestyle: Ensuring overall good health through healthy eating and regular exercise can improve quality of life and treatment options.
