Yes,Carol, I do. I myself had one 5 years ago at age 72. I did well and now volunteer at the hospital where I had mine done as a peer to peer counselor. Some of the patients having transplants there are in their late 70,s. A doctor there told me that they are now doing them on patients in their early 80’s. The health status of the patient is an important consideration.

Thanks so much Patricia! My husbands doctor said he is a good candidate for the stem cell transplant. He has no heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. It’s so good to read your story.

Older individuals, like your husband, may have leukemic cells that are resistant to standard therapies and may not tolerate intensive treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or stem cell transplantation (BMT) as well as younger patients.

It's important to discuss with your healthcare team about the specific risks and benefits of a BMT for your husband. They can provide personalized information based on his overall health and specific circumstances. Additionally, connecting with others who have gone through similar experiences can be helpful. MyLeukemiaTeam is a platform where people living with leukemia share their stories and support each other.
