My daughter has horrible mouth sores caused from methotrexate. How can we treat these and avoid them in the future?

I had horrible mouthsores when on chemo in hospital. I used baking soda mixed in warm water as a mouthwash. My doctor ended up prescribing a medicine to apply directly to the sores with a swab, but I think the baking soda worked better.

Hem-Onc used to prescribe a prescription called Magic Mouthwash… Almost like Pepto-Bismol w/lidocaine that you swish around mouth & spit out…. Another option is Warm Purified Water w/Medical saline & baking soda… Let ur MD know, you need some help… The mouth sores should be examined ea visit… Everything is getting lax… Make sure you make this problem known… You shouldn’t have to suffer w/this as well….

I found baking soda for tooth paste helped along with a water pick and diluted mouthwash helped. Weirdly, drinking Ensure helped a lot. It helped to keep my weight up and coated my mouth. Any tooth paste with mint caused blisters. Hang in there you get used to it.

I have had bad mouth sores for past 6 months. My doctor prescribed Magic mouthwash and Dexamethazone rinse. My dentist goes over the sores once a month with laser. I have been partially happy with the results. In my case leisons are still there.

Baking soda has another great benefit, here in Australia there 'Peter Mac' mouth wash which you can get free of charge from your hospital.
