Getting Away

A MyLeukemiaTeam Member asked a question 💭

During treatment has anyone been able to travel? We are just at the beginning but I feel like we can't do anything or plan. It's 7 days of chemo in cancer center, then blood work twice a week! The center is 45 minutes from us so we can't do anything else. Monday we spent 3 hours at the center for blood work and all the numbers were good. Has to be a better way.

I am still going to treatment and my wife has missed a timeshare meeting with family for the last four years. I decided I wanted her to go for her. She is so wonderful and takes care of all my needs. She will be gone for 5 days with her sister and brother-in-law. I wanted her to go for some time out.

Yes coming out of the pandemic just when things were going back to normal we are back to isolation. We just booked a cruise for may of 2023 before he was diagnosed i really fear we won't be able to do it. Right now the cruise requires vaccine but things are changing. Happy cruising! Sounds wonderful.

I know how you feel. It is really hard. Before my stem cell transplant, i was on axacitidine and ventoclax. I was not allowed to travel. I missed my grandson’s graduation from Emory. I was allowed to travel by car from NY to Pennsylvania for my son’s 50th birthday but had to be very careful. I masked when using the public restroom along the way and kept myself separate from other party guests. After the transplant, covid hit so I could not travel. Happily, after the covid vaccine and two years post transplant;ant I was able to take a vaccine only cruise. It was wonderful. We are taking 3 more cruises, vaccine required as well as negative covid test over the next few months. Just hang in there and be patient. i wish you happy future travels.

Thanks that encouraging the doctor keeps telling us that she expects the numbers to go down and so far they haven't so we are confused. She did mention those anc numbers but not sure what they are on the cbc. I see neutrophils abs is that it? His number was 2.63 sound right? That sounds great that they are reducing your meds. I believe my husband is getting azacitidine 3 shots for 7 days along with venetoclax pills for 14 days. He gets 2 weeks off then starts all over so a 4 week cycle.

I have MDS as you know. The answer to your question will be based on your husband's response to the treatment. I have been on the seven shot regimen of Azacitidine for the last year. It has been 7 days and two and a half weeks off, but with CBC blood work done every Monday for oncologist to monitor results of treatment. Beginning April 24, she is reducing my shots to 5 per week with three weeks off in between. I was told I could travel and be away for a couple of weeks at a time, if I chose to. I don't know that there is a better way. The critical part you related is that the numbers were good. I would hope that if you get those numbers up, you might be able to plan. When I was faced with the choice of going to the VA Hospital in Tampa for introductory chemo, I was fortunate and chose a cancer center two miles from me. I also looked up foods and supplements that would help to increase certain numbers and that helped. I pay special attention to my ANC count ( Absolute Neutrophils ) as they make up a good portion of the white cells and of course I have a close eye on RBC, MBC, and Platelets.
